Home Remedies For Kidney Stones
Home Remedies For Kidney Stones
It’s been said the pain of kidney stones is like giving birth. But, whilst childbirth is a welcome and predicable event, the sudden, excruciating pain of a kidney stone strikes without warning. Such is the shock and the agony of this, it’s hardly surprising you’ll readily agree to surgery. Yet a little research will uncover some very effective home remedies for kidney stones, which can avoid painful, invasive surgery in the majority of cases.
To understand how it’s actually possible to avoid the surgeon’s scalpel, you need to picture a kidney stone. Think of a ball about 1/4 inch (4 -5 mm) in diameter. The cause of kidney stones is a build up of crystals which coagulate together to form the stone. Whilst it remains in the kidney, you will be oblivious to it. The problems only arise when the stone starts to move out of the kidney and down the narrow tube, called the ureter, linking the kidney with the bladder.
Being made up of a mass of crystals, the surface of the stone tends to be very rough — jagged even — and the more jagged and rough the surface, the more pain it will cause as these jagged points dig into the walls of the ureter. In extreme cases, the jagged edges will dig in so deeply the stone will stop traveling down the tube and block it. If that happens, the crisis deepens, because apart from extending the length of the pain indefinitely, there is a real risk the blocked ureter will cause a dangerous infection. This is because the body’s waste products, normally regularly expelled in the urine, are unable to get past the blockage and get backed up into the kidneys themselves.
The irony is that, whilst modern lifestyles and diets are a major cause of kidney stones, which now affect 1.2 million Americans a year, the most effective home remedies for kidney stones are actually based around regular grocery items.
Chief among these is acid to quickly dissolve those jagged edges and thus reduce that agonizing pain. Don’t be alarmed at the prospect of drinking acid, because many of the beneficial foods we eat contain acid. For example, that freshly squeezed Florida orange juice — a great way to start your breakfast — contains citric acid. And cranberries, prunes and plums are among some of the best health-giving foods, yet are rich in benzoic acid. Even that old favorite for keeping the doctor at bay: the apple, has high levels of malic acid, which give the fruit its clean, sharp taste.
Acid acts on the stone, smoothing off those jagged edges. That should give some rapid pain relief. Then, as the acid continues to dissolve the stone, reducing its size a little more, the stone will be ready to pass harmlessly down the narrow tube of the ureter into the bladder. To help this process, you should drink a quantity of fibrous vegetable juice. This will benefit the kidneys and help push the stone down the tube.
Once the stone is out of the ureter, your pain should have all but gone, although you might feel a little bruised for a while. Once in the bladder, the stone will be broken down some more by the residual acid. At this stage, it may even break into small fragments. Then these will be flushed harmlessly out of the body, during urination.
The third and final process of all home remedies for kidney stones should be a complete flush of the system by drinking plenty of clean, fresh water. In fact, not drinking sufficient water is the main cause of kidney stones, because insufficient water allows the crystals that form the stone to coagulate in the kidneys, rather than being flushed out of the body.
But many sufferers often experience a repeat occurrence — even after surgery — because they fail to adjust their diet and lifestyle. So develop that first good habit, of drinking several glasses of pure water every day, whilst that agony is fresh in your mind. Also be aware soda and other beverages are no substitute for pure water. Indeed, many are diuretic and so actually dehydrate the body.
Now you are aware of other more attractive alternatives to surgery, I hope you will feel empowered to avoid the pain and inconvenience of a hospital visit. And, if you usually pay for medical treatment, you’ll be delighted to know using these home remedies for kidney stones will result in a much smaller bill!
